When two or more elements combine chemically to form a new substance, the new substance is called compound. A compound may be totally different from the elements combined. Example- water is formed when hydrogen burns with oxygen. Oxygen helps things to burn and hydrogen catches fire easily . But water when combined is required to put out fire.
